Cream O' Galloway

Non tatty scone

The venue was Cream O' Galloway in the south west of Scotland, situated on a farm — a picturesque, quaint place. The weather was warm and sunny. We opted for the fruit scone with jam and butter in anticipation of a scoop or two of ice cream to follow. The unanimous decision today was to have our cream iced, not clotted.

The tea was served in one of those metal pots and a small generic white cup and saucer, the kind you find at a dinner hall or cheap cafe. Not classy at all, and if you know me, I like to keep it classy.

The scones were clearly homemade due to their peculiar misshapen appearance, and while they tasted good, they were a tad dry. The strawberry jam, served in a small glass ramekin, was inoffensive but a bit sweet, and I wouldn't be surprised if it originated out of a big tub bought at Booker. Origin of jam is still unknown. The scone, butter and jam was only £2.50 and the tea £2.25, so value is the name of the game here.

With 20-odd ice cream flavours I picked rum and raisin and gingerbread in a standard if rather large cone. The gingerbread was delicious and gingerbready, while the rum and raisin was rum-like and raisiny. Two tissues were used to mop up the melting cream as it slithered down the cone and my chin and my fingers and my thumb(s).

Overall 3.5/5. Not a disaster but could do better on the cream tea front. I would return for the ice cream and idyllic scenery, but opt for a slice of toast and an orange juice beforehand.
